What's happening

This bill expands reimbursement to nonpublic schools for costs related to the state's immunization program and other health requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Nonpublic schools will now be able to claim reimbursement for complying with the state’s immunization program and other health-related requirements. , not just for academic data and testing mandates. This means they can offset costs related to student health compliance, which can be significant.

  2. The bill removes previous reimbursement caps (such as the “sixty cents per pupil” limit) for certain cities and updates eligibility to include costs incurred in the 2017-2018 school year and beyond. This could lead to higher reimbursements and better financial support for nonpublic schools in New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester.

  3. By easing the financial burden of state health compliance, the bill may help nonpublic schools maintain or enhance health and safety standards,. potentially reducing disparities between public and nonpublic schools in meeting state health mandates.
