What's happening

This bill allows certain licensed health professionals in New York to form multidisciplinary limited liability companies and partnerships for providing integrated services.

Why it matters

  1. Enables broader collaboration among health professionals. By permitting various licensed health professionals (including physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, and others named in the Education Law) to jointly form limited liability companies (LLCs), professional corporations, and partnerships, the bill encourages integrated, team-based care that reflects the complexity of modern health needs.

  2. Protects professional autonomy and scope. The bill sets clear guardrails prohibiting any member from interfering with another’s clinical judgment or directing a colleague to practice outside their licensed scope. This helps maintain professional standards while allowing for collaboration.

  3. Facilitates “one-stop” health services for patients. Patients may benefit from easier access to coordinated, multidisciplinary care under one organizational roof, potentially improving outcomes for those with complex or overlapping needs that require multiple types of expertise.

  4. Addresses legal and reimbursement barriers. The bill explicitly allows for pooling and sharing of fees among professionals in these new multidisciplinary entities, which could reduce administrative burdens and resolve longstanding issues around “fee-splitting” prohibitions that have discouraged collaborative practice structures.
