What's happening

This bill requires the state to cover 90% of each school district's cost for transporting students to nonpublic schools.

Why it matters

  1. Shifts state funding priorities. By covering 90% of student transportation costs to nonpublic (private and parochial) schools, the bill reallocates significant state resources, which could affect funding available for other educational programs or services.

  2. Potentially increases access to nonpublic schools. Lowering the transportation cost barrier may enable more families—especially those with limited means—to consider nonpublic schooling options for their children.

  3. Financial relief for school districts. Districts currently responsible for a large share of these transportation costs would see a major reduction in local expenditures, potentially easing tax burdens or freeing up budget for other district needs.

  4. Raises questions of equity and public vs. private support. The bill could prompt debate over the use of public funds to support services for students attending private institutions, which may not be subject to the same regulations or serve the same populations as public schools.
