What's happening
This bill requires the New York education department to annually report on workforce needs and educational credential production, with the law expiring after three years.
Why it matters
Links education output to workforce demand. By requiring annual reporting on both workforce needs and the number of degrees, certificates, and credentials produced, the bill aims to help policymakers, educators, and employers better align educational programs with real job market demands.
Highlights gaps and opportunities. The mandated reports must identify areas where workforce needs are not being met, including specific vocations and experience levels, potentially driving targeted investment or program expansion to address these shortages.
Supports data-driven decision making. The dissemination of these reports to legislative committees, public education boards, and their availability online increases transparency and encourages the use of up-to-date data in policy and program development across the education and labor sectors.
Explores real-time labor market information. By studying the feasibility of making this information available in real time, the bill could pave the way for more responsive and adaptive educational and workforce planning in the future, benefiting job seekers, employers, and educators alike.
