What's happening

This bill creates a $10 million fund to train current and future teachers in educating students with autism in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Establishes a dedicated, ongoing fund. By creating a special fund managed by the state comptroller, the bill ensures a stable and protected source of money specifically for autism-related teacher training, not just a one-time grant.

  2. Supports both current and future educators. Funding is available for professional development of existing teachers as well as for those studying to become teachers, aiming to build systemic capacity across New York’s education workforce.

  3. Mandates state oversight and accountability. The commissioner of education is responsible for developing the training program, setting rules, and ensuring that funds are used appropriately and fully within each fiscal year, which should promote program quality and fiscal responsibility.

  4. Allows for diverse funding sources. The fund can accept not only state appropriations but also federal grants, private donations, and other contributions, potentially expanding its impact and sustainability.
