What's happening

This bill exempts certain horse racing agreements from state and federal antitrust laws if jointly approved by the state gaming commission and attorney general.

Why it matters

  1. Allows horse racing organizations to coordinate schedules and broadcasting rights without risk of antitrust lawsuits,. which could encourage more cooperation among tracks and betting entities to optimize race dates and wagering options.

  2. Requires joint approval from both the state gaming commission and the attorney general,. adding a layer of oversight that aims to ensure such agreements serve the public interest and prevent potential abuses.

  3. Explicitly aims to protect and promote the economic sustainability of New York’s horse racing and agriculture sectors,. signaling a legislative intent to support jobs and revenue tied to these industries.

  4. Could impact competition and consumer choice in the racing and betting markets,. as collaborative agreements among major players may reduce the number of independent options but might also enhance the stability and attractiveness of New York horse racing overall.
