What's happening

This bill requires students who receive a career development credential but not a Regents diploma to be awarded a CDOS diploma, and mandates IEP students be re-evaluated after 10th grade to determine their educational track.

Why it matters

  1. Ensures students who do not meet Regents diploma requirements but do complete the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) credential receive a formal CDOS diploma. , which may help them demonstrate achievement and skills to employers or post-secondary programs.

  2. Mandates a formal re-evaluation process for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) after 10th-grade Regents testing. , providing a structured checkpoint to determine if continuing on a Regents track or transitioning to CDOS is most appropriate for their future prospects.

  3. Could lead to more tailored educational planning for students with disabilities. , by involving the Committee on Special Education in reassessing students' academic paths, potentially reducing inappropriate placements and increasing opportunities for success.

  4. May impact post-graduation outcomes and support services available to students. , as clearly defined credentials can influence access to jobs, vocational training, and further education, especially for those who might otherwise leave school without a recognized diploma.
