What's happening

This bill requires vehicles transporting five or more weapons and related ammunition in New York to use secure, locked storage areas, with violations resulting in fines.

Why it matters

  1. Increases security standards. for the transport of multiple weapons and sufficient ammunition by mandating locked, physically robust storage compartments that separate firearms from ammunition, aiming to reduce risks of theft or misuse during transit.

  2. Empowers state regulators. (the commissioner) to create and update specific rules for how weapons and ammunition must be transported, allowing for adaptable enforcement as security technology or risks evolve.

  3. Establishes significant financial penalties. ($1,000–$5,000 per violation), creating a strong deterrent for non-compliance and signaling the seriousness with which the state treats large-scale weapons transportation.

  4. Directly impacts businesses and individuals. involved in the transport of firearms and ammunition—such as gun dealers, shooting ranges, and collectors—by introducing potentially costly compliance requirements and operational changes.
