What's happening
This bill allows non-contiguous school districts in Southampton and East Hampton to form a central high school district if one district is small and lacks a high school program.
Why it matters
Addresses challenges of small or isolated school districts. By allowing non-contiguous districts (if one is small and lacks a high school) to join together, the bill helps ensure students in tiny or geographically separated communities can access a full high school program without their district needing to build and staff its own school.
Could improve educational opportunities and efficiency. Smaller districts that cannot offer high school classes would gain access to shared resources, extracurriculars, and advanced coursework by forming a joint high school with another district, potentially improving educational outcomes.
Enables flexibility in district organization. The change allows more creative and responsive approaches to education governance in places with unique geography or population patterns, rather than forcing all districts to follow the same rules designed for more densely populated areas.
