What's happening

This bill prohibits considering the financial impact on or objections by existing liquor store licensees when reviewing new license applications.

Why it matters

  1. Levels the Playing Field for New Businesses. By preventing the consideration of financial impact or objections from current liquor store license holders, the bill aims to reduce the power of established businesses to block new competitors, potentially fostering greater competition and consumer choice.

  2. Shifts Focus to Public Interest, Not Private Interests. The licensing authority must base decisions on “public convenience and advantage” rather than protecting the business interests of existing stores, which could lead to more objective and community-oriented licensing decisions.

  3. May Lower Barriers to Entry. Entrepreneurs and small business owners may find it easier to enter the market, as their applications cannot be denied simply because established competitors object or claim potential financial harm.

  4. Could Affect Local Economies and Consumer Prices. Increased competition might drive down prices and improve service for consumers, but could also lead to more stores in some areas, potentially impacting the viability of existing businesses.
