What's happening

This bill eliminates the annual service charge and instead imposes a one-time $20 fee for volunteer ambulance service license plates.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces ongoing costs for volunteer ambulance workers. By removing the annual service charge, volunteers will no longer face recurring fees for their service plates, providing them with a small but meaningful financial benefit.

  2. Simplifies the fee structure. Replacing an annual charge with a one-time $20 fee makes the process easier to understand and manage, both for volunteers and for the state’s administrative systems.

  3. May encourage volunteerism and plate uptake. Lowering the long-term cost and hassle of obtaining and keeping these plates could motivate more ambulance volunteers to display them, potentially boosting recognition and appreciation of their public service.
