What's happening
This bill allows children's camps to hire or contract additional licensed health and mental health professionals to provide services to campers and staff.
Why it matters
Expands the types of health and mental health professionals camps can bring on board,. including psychologists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, behavioral analysts, creative arts therapists, and athletic trainers, not just nurses and doctors. This could improve access to specialized care for children with diverse needs.
Ensures that all professional decisions and interactions are made by the licensed professionals themselves,. protecting the autonomy and clinical judgment of these practitioners and potentially leading to higher quality, individualized care for campers and staff.
May improve camper safety, inclusion, and overall well-being. by making it easier for camps to address physical, mental health, and developmental needs on-site—potentially allowing more children, including those with disabilities or mental health challenges, to participate in camp programs.
Could provide additional support for staff as well as campers,. recognizing the importance of mental health and physical well-being for everyone involved in the camp environment, and possibly leading to better staff retention and morale.
