This bill requires information about new housing construction, including estimated school-age children, to be reported to the NYC Department of Education.
Why it matters
Aims to improve school planning. by ensuring the Department of Education receives timely data on how much new housing is likely to add to local school-aged populations, allowing for better forecasting of overcrowding or resource needs.
Requires developers to provide detailed projections. not just the location, but also the expected number of families and estimated school-age children—at the permit application stage, increasing accountability and transparency in the impact of new housing.
Mandates city agencies to create standardized methods. for estimating how many families and children will occupy new or converted dwellings, potentially leading to more accurate and consistent data across projects.
Could influence housing and school policy. by making the connection between real estate development and public school capacity explicit, potentially affecting decisions on zoning, school construction, or resource allocation.
