What's happening

This bill establishes new installation and maintenance standards for fire suppression systems at gas stations in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Requires that all gas station fire suppression systems use extinguishing agents specifically designed to put out petroleum fires, which directly addresses the unique risks posed by gasoline and other fuels.

  2. Mandates that unattended self-service gas stations have their fire suppression systems monitored by an approved supervising station, increasing safety oversight at locations without on-site staff.

  3. Establishes strict installation, maintenance, and inspection protocols—including requirements for trained technicians, regular servicing and testing, and on-premises inspection records for five years—aiming to ensure these systems are reliable and effective over time.

  4. Imposes significant penalties for non-compliance, such as revoking a building’s certificate of occupancy or permit to operate fuel dispensers, giving the law strong enforcement tools to ensure adherence and public safety.
