What's happening

This bill requires New York's financial aid determinations for students to be made within 60 days or eligibility is automatically granted.

Why it matters

  1. Speeds up access to financial aid. , ensuring students aren’t left waiting indefinitely for critical funding decisions that can affect their ability to enroll or remain in school.

  2. Shifts the burden of delay to the state agency. , meaning if the agency fails to act in time, students automatically receive aid, which increases administrative accountability and prevents bureaucratic delays from hurting students.

  3. Creates a clear, enforceable timeline. for both students and institutions, leading to more predictable financial planning and potentially reducing student stress and last-minute disruptions to educational plans.

  4. Includes a limited extension option. (an extra 30 days if notified), balancing administrative realities with the need for timely decisions, while still prioritizing student access if deadlines are not met.
