What's happening

This bill requires all New York teachers colleges to add instruction in mental health to their curricula.

Why it matters

  1. Prepares future teachers to better recognize and address student mental health issues. by ensuring educators-in-training receive formal instruction, this bill aims to equip them with the skills to identify early warning signs and respond appropriately.

  2. Could improve overall school climate and student outcomes. teachers who understand mental health may foster more supportive classrooms, reduce stigma, and be better partners in student well-being, ultimately impacting attendance, behavior, and academic success.

  3. Mandates statewide consistency in teacher preparation programs. all New York teacher colleges would be required to meet the same standard for mental health instruction, reducing disparities between institutions and ensuring a baseline of competency among new teachers.
