What's happening

This bill designates the bridge on state route 97 in Hancock, Delaware County, as the "David H. Newman Sr. Memorial Bridge."

Why it matters

  1. Honors a community figure. Naming the bridge after David H. Newman Sr. recognizes his significance to the Hancock community, potentially boosting local pride and memorializing his contributions.

  2. Ceremonial impact, not legal change. The bill specifies that the bridge’s official name remains unchanged for legal and commercial purposes—helping to avoid confusion for mapping, navigation, and freight logistics.

  3. State-level recognition mechanism. This reflects how New York uses highway law to create ceremonial designations, showcasing a way communities can gain visibility for important local individuals or causes.
