What's happening

This bill designates the bridge on state route 97 in Hancock, Delaware County as the "David H. Newman Sr. Memorial Bridge."

Why it matters

  1. Honors a Local Figure. Designating the bridge as the "David H. Newman Sr. Memorial Bridge" formally recognizes and honors the contributions of David H. Newman Sr., which can foster community pride and remembrance.

  2. Ceremonial, Not Legal Name Change. The bill specifies that the naming is ceremonial only—the official legal name of the bridge remains unchanged, minimizing bureaucratic or logistical complications for maps, emergency services, and commerce.

  3. State Resources for Signage. The Department of Transportation is tasked with installing and maintaining signs to mark the new designation, meaning state resources will be used for this recognition and ongoing awareness.

  4. Community and Historical Significance. Such designations can help preserve local history and provide a lasting public reminder of individuals who have had an impact on the area, potentially encouraging civic engagement and education.
