What's happening

This bill requires the New York Department of Education to collect and report data on the ethnicity and multilingual status of licensed social workers.

Why it matters

  1. Improves understanding of workforce diversity. By collecting detailed information on the ethnicity and multilingual skills of licensed social workers, the state can better assess whether the profession reflects the diversity of New York’s population, which is important for equitable service delivery.

  2. Supports targeted recruitment and training. The data can inform efforts to recruit and retain social workers from underrepresented backgrounds and those who speak multiple languages, potentially addressing gaps in culturally and linguistically competent care.

  3. Enables accountability and informed policymaking. Annual reporting to key state leaders ensures ongoing transparency and can guide future legislation or Department of Education initiatives related to social work licensure, education, and workforce planning.
