What's happening

This bill entitles New York public employees to paid leave for cervical cancer screenings, in addition to existing breast cancer screening leave.

Why it matters

  1. Expands access to preventive healthcare. for public employees by explicitly granting paid leave for cervical cancer screenings, which may encourage more individuals to get screened and detect cancer earlier.

  2. Addresses gender equity in healthcare benefits. , as cervical cancer primarily affects women and adding this benefit acknowledges the importance of comprehensive women’s health coverage in workplace policies.

  3. Reduces potential financial and time-related barriers. for public employees who may have previously postponed or skipped screenings due to work obligations or unpaid time off.

  4. Signals state recognition of cervical cancer as a significant public health concern. , which could set a precedent for other employers or states to broaden coverage for preventive health services.
