What's happening

This bill adjusts New York City's minimum school funding to reflect inflation and adds $2.2 billion above 2006-07 spending levels.

Why it matters

  1. Links NYC’s minimum school funding to inflation. , using the 5-year average change in the local Consumer Price Index, which helps ensure school budgets keep pace with rising costs for goods, services, and salaries in the region.

  2. Guarantees an extra $2.2 billion above 2006-07 spending. as a baseline, meaning NYC schools get a permanent boost in minimum funding, not just a one-time adjustment—potentially addressing long-standing resource gaps.

  3. Specifies that this new funding cannot be used to cover debt service or pension payments. , ensuring that additional money is spent directly on educational services and supports for students rather than on city financial obligations.

  4. Builds in a mechanism for proportional funding decreases only if the city’s overall budget shrinks. , which helps protect schools from disproportionate cuts during citywide fiscal downturns, maintaining stability for students and educators.
