What's happening

This bill allows licensed psychiatrists and psychologists to join limited liability companies and partnerships providing clinical social work services in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Expands team-based care. By permitting psychiatrists and psychologists to join LLCs and partnerships offering clinical social work services, the bill encourages more integrated mental health practices, which could improve patient care by fostering collaboration among mental health professionals.

  2. Increases flexibility for mental health providers. The change allows mental health professionals to structure their businesses more efficiently, potentially reducing administrative hurdles and legal complexities that previously kept psychiatrists and psychologists from formally joining certain social work practices.

  3. Potential to improve access to services. With more flexible business arrangements, practices may be able to grow or offer a broader range of mental health services under one roof, making it easier for New Yorkers to access coordinated care.

  4. Aligns business law with evolving health care delivery. The bill modernizes state regulations to reflect current trends in multidisciplinary mental health care, making it easier for practices to adapt to new models of service provision and respond to community needs.
