What's happening

This bill lets the MTA suspend vehicle registrations for unpaid tolls or fines exceeding $100.

Why it matters

  1. MTA debts only. The authority would gain registration enforcement power over vehicle owners owing it more than $100 in toll charges, fines or both.

  2. Payment conditions. A registration hold or suspension could remain until the entire balance is paid or covered by an MTA-authorized payment plan.

  3. New enforcement power. The bill would authorize the MTA itself to impose registration holds or suspensions, taking effect 30 days after becoming law.

Who cares

  • Vehicle owners owing MTA tolls or fines

Balances exceeding $100 could put their vehicle registrations at risk.

  • Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The bill would give the authority a new tool to collect unpaid toll charges and fines.

  • Owners seeking payment plans

An MTA-authorized payment plan could provide an alternative to paying the full balance to resolve a registration hold or suspension.
