What's happening

This bill allows games of chance licensees to accept board-approved alternative forms of payment, not just cash, scrip, or chips.

Why it matters

  1. Expands payment options for games of chance. By allowing board-approved alternative forms of payment, this bill could enable cashless transactions, including debit cards, mobile payments, or other emerging technologies, making it easier for participants to play.

  2. Potential for increased participation and revenue. The flexibility in payment methods may attract more participants who don’t carry cash, potentially increasing both attendance and proceeds for organizations running these games.

  3. Greater regulatory oversight and adaptability. By giving the board authority to approve new payment forms, the law can more easily adapt to future financial technologies and ensure that all methods used are secure and appropriate for gambling contexts.

  4. Possible impacts on consumer protection and problem gambling. Easier access to alternative payments may require additional safeguards, as it could make spending less tangible and potentially increase risks of overspending or problem gambling.
