What's happening
This bill creates a special registration and fee for snowmobiles used only for hunting, fishing, and trapping, with penalties for misuse.
Why it matters
Creates a lower-cost "non-trail" snowmobile registration. specifically for those accessing hunting, fishing, or trapping areas, but bans their use on official snowmobile trails—potentially saving money for outdoor enthusiasts who don’t use the maintained trail system.
Directs most of the registration fee and fines to trail maintenance funds. , meaning that even those not using designated trails still financially support the broader snowmobile infrastructure.
Establishes clear penalties for misuse. , including a $200 fine (with half going to trail maintenance) and, for repeat violations within three years, a one-year suspension of hunting, fishing, or trapping licenses—creating a strong deterrent against improper use.
Includes a sunset provision. the law and its new registration category will expire after three years unless renewed, allowing lawmakers to review its effectiveness and impact before making it permanent.
