What's happening
This bill ensures that tuition benefits and scholarships for military service are excluded from income calculations for New York tuition assistance awards.
Why it matters
Ensures military service-related tuition benefits and scholarships (such as the federal Montgomery GI Bill) are not counted as income. when determining eligibility or award amounts for New York’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), allowing student veterans to receive both forms of aid without penalty.
Prevents a reduction in state financial aid. for veterans and military service members who also receive federal or military scholarships, helping them cover more of their total education costs and reducing their out-of-pocket expenses or debt load.
Supports recruitment and retention in the armed forces. by making New York’s higher education more accessible to current and former military members, recognizing their service and making state aid more equitable.
