What's happening
This bill requires New York colleges to disclose financial benefits or expenses related to study abroad programs upon request.
Why it matters
Increases transparency about college finances related to study abroad. By requiring colleges to disclose any financial benefits (like commissions or incentives) or expenses connected to specific study abroad programs, this bill may help students and families better understand if financial relationships are influencing program recommendations.
Empowers students to make more informed decisions. Access to information about perquisites or the actual costs paid by the college for overseas programs can help students evaluate whether a study abroad option is truly in their best interest, rather than being promoted due to hidden financial incentives.
Promotes accountability and ethical partnerships. Colleges will need to be clear about any perks or financial gains they receive from study abroad providers, helping to discourage potentially unethical arrangements and ensuring institutional recommendations are based on educational value, not financial benefit.
