What's happening

This bill requires the Division of Veterans' Affairs to annually remind assessors that veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq are eligible for the alternative real property tax exemption.

Why it matters

  1. Ensures that local property tax assessors are clearly informed that veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq are covered under the “Persian Gulf conflict” category for the alternative real property tax exemption. This clarification can help prevent veterans from being wrongly denied benefits due to misunderstandings or outdated information.

  2. Promotes consistent and equitable application of property tax exemptions for veterans across New York State. By mandating annual reminders, the bill aims to reduce discrepancies between localities and ensure that veterans of recent conflicts are not overlooked.

  3. May increase awareness among eligible veterans themselves. When assessors are better informed, they can more effectively communicate with veterans, potentially leading to more qualified individuals receiving a benefit they earned through their service.
