What's happening
This bill allows not-for-profit dental clinics to use public school buildings and grounds to provide services to children.
Why it matters
Expands access to dental care for children. by allowing not-for-profit clinics to operate directly in public schools, making it easier for students—especially those from low-income families or underserved communities—to receive dental services without having to leave school.
Ensures service quality and safety. by requiring that dental health professionals providing care in these clinics be properly licensed and authorized according to New York state law, helping to protect children’s health.
Limits financial impact on schools. by specifying that the cost of providing dental services cannot be charged to the school district (unless otherwise authorized by law), and clinic space won’t affect the school’s building aid calculations, aiming to prevent unintended budget consequences for schools.
Promotes inclusivity. by prohibiting the exclusion of any district child from accessing these dental services, regardless of which public school they attend or if they attend a district school at all, supporting broader community health equity.
