What's happening
This bill amends education law to promote wellness in schools by including diabetes risk analysis and expanding nutrition and health education, including respiratory diseases.
Why it matters
Introducing diabetes risk analysis during student health exams. means that schools may be able to identify at-risk children earlier, enabling interventions that could prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and related complications during childhood.
Expanding the focus of nutrition committees to include chronic respiratory diseases. (such as asthma and chronic bronchitis) recognizes the connection between diet, weight, and respiratory health, potentially leading to more comprehensive school wellness programs.
Shifting from “health” to “wellness” in school policy language. encourages a broader, proactive approach to student well-being, emphasizing not just the absence of illness but the promotion of lifelong healthy habits.
Increased reporting and educational efforts targeting parents, teachers, and students about obesity and respiratory health risks. can improve community awareness, potentially reducing stigma and supporting healthier environments both in and outside of school.

Weight status categories for children and adolescents shall be as defined by the commissioner of health. In all school districts such physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner shall determine whether a one-time test for sickle cell anemia is necessary or desirable and he or she shall conduct such a test and the certificate shall state the results.
