What's happening

This bill requires colleges to promptly report all campus crimes to local police and state authorities, with penalties for noncompliance.

Why it matters

  1. Increases transparency and accountability. by requiring colleges to directly report all campus criminal activity to both local police and a state agency, ensuring crimes are not handled solely internally or underreported.

  2. Strengthens oversight by state authorities. through mandated monthly reporting to the Division of Criminal Justice Services, which will annually review, compile, and publish data with recommendations for state policymakers.

  3. Ties state funding to compliance. , meaning colleges that fail to report crimes as required risk losing eligibility for any state aid or assistance—creating a strong financial incentive for adherence.

  4. Standardizes campus crime data collection and publication statewide. , potentially empowering students, parents, and the public with more accurate information about campus safety across New York colleges.
