What's happening
This bill allows campus safety officers to intervene and notify emergency contacts when a student exhibits signs of mental illness, and requires schools to inform students about this policy.
Why it matters
Expands campus safety roles. The bill empowers campus safety officers to act under New York’s mental hygiene law, allowing them to intervene directly when students exhibit signs of mental illness, potentially leading to emergency removal or intervention.
Increases transparency for students. By requiring schools to notify all students about this intervention policy upon admission, the bill ensures students are aware of possible responses to mental health crises on campus, which could impact their willingness to seek help or disclose issues.
Mandates emergency notification. The bill obligates institutions to inform a student's designated emergency contact immediately if the student is removed due to mental health concerns, which could have significant privacy implications and affect how students list emergency contacts.
Aims to address campus safety and mental health. This legislation attempts to balance immediate campus safety concerns with the need for timely mental health intervention, potentially prompting broader conversations about student rights, stigma, and access to care.
