What's happening

This bill allows school nurses to adjust a student's insulin dosage per prescriber or authorized parental instructions.

Why it matters

  1. Empowers school nurses to respond flexibly to students' immediate health needs. , allowing them to adjust insulin doses not just by a doctor's standing order, but also based on real-time instructions from parents—if the prescriber has explicitly given that authority. This addresses the unpredictable nature of diabetes management in children.

  2. May improve safety and reduce risks for students with diabetes at school. , as nurses can make timely insulin adjustments without waiting for direct physician communication, potentially preventing dangerous high or low blood sugar events during the school day.

  3. Clarifies and expands the legal protections for nurses. , reducing their liability when following prescriber- and parent-authorized instructions, which may encourage more proactive diabetes care and foster collaboration between parents, healthcare providers, and school staff.
