What's happening

This bill requires health and wellness education and outreach programs to prevent sudden cardiac arrest among student athletes, including best practices and informational materials for students and parents.

Why it matters

  1. Promotes earlier detection and prevention of heart conditions. by mandating evidence-based health screenings and best practices for students participating in school sports, potentially reducing the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

  2. Empowers families with critical information. by requiring that students and their parents/guardians receive accessible materials explaining what sudden cardiac arrest is, its warning signs, and how common it is among student athletes.

  3. Ensures medical accuracy and broad support. by involving respected organizations—such as the state’s Medical Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Heart Association—in developing educational content, raising the quality and credibility of the outreach.

  4. Clarifies available screening options and their limits. , so families can make better-informed decisions about private cardiac screening, while understanding that no screening is perfect—helping to manage expectations and avoid false reassurance.
