What's happening
This bill creates a new career and practical education (CPE) pathway to a high school diploma, emphasizing practical skills and work-based learning.
Why it matters
Expands diploma options to include hands-on, career-focused learning. The new CPE pathway offers an alternative to the traditional academic track, emphasizing practical skills and work-based experiences that can better prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce.
Increases inclusivity for diverse student populations. By making the CPE pathway available to all students—including those with disabilities and English language learners—the bill could help more students earn a diploma who might otherwise struggle with standard academic requirements.
Aligns high school education with regional workforce needs. The bill identifies specific career fields (like agriculture, healthcare, business, trades, and technical education), potentially helping address local labor shortages and giving students a clearer path to stable employment after graduation.
Shifts assessment focus from standardized tests to demonstrated skills. The CPE pathway relies on completion of practical coursework, final exams given by schools, work-based learning, and employability profiles, rather than just statewide standardized assessments, which may be a better measure of readiness for certain careers.
