What's happening
This bill extends Suffolk County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax through November 30, 2019.
Why it matters
Extending the authority to impose the extra 1% sales tax means Suffolk County can maintain a significant revenue stream, which may be critical for funding local services and balancing the county’s budget.
A portion of the revenue (at least 12.5% and up to 37.5%) is specifically earmarked for public safety, so the tax extension directly supports police, fire, and emergency services, potentially impacting community safety and response times.
The remainder of the revenue goes into Suffolk County’s general fund, giving the county flexibility to address other priorities or fiscal challenges, which could affect local programs, infrastructure, or tax rates in other areas.
By extending the end date to November 30, 2019, the bill gives county officials more time to plan for longer-term fiscal stability, but also extends the period in which residents and consumers pay the higher tax rate on purchases.
