What's happening

This bill extends Suffolk County's authority to impose hotel and motel taxes until December 31, 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Continued Revenue for Local Services. Extending the hotel and motel tax allows Suffolk County to maintain a dedicated stream of revenue, which can support local services, tourism initiatives, and infrastructure without raising other taxes.

  2. Impact on Visitors and Tourism Industry. The extension means that visitors staying at hotels and motels will keep paying this tax, potentially affecting the overall cost of visiting Suffolk County and influencing tourism-related businesses.

  3. Short-Term Financial Planning. By extending the authority only until the end of 2019, the bill provides a short window for county officials to plan future budgets and consider the long-term use or adjustment of this tax.

  4. Local Control and Flexibility. The legislation reinforces local government’s ability to manage its own tax policy, giving Suffolk County flexibility in addressing its unique fiscal and economic needs.
