What's happening
This bill extends Suffolk County's authority to impose hotel and motel taxes until December 31, 2019.
Why it matters
Continued Local Revenue. Extending the hotel and motel tax allows Suffolk County to maintain a significant source of revenue, which can support local services, infrastructure, and tourism-related projects without raising other taxes.
Stability for Budget Planning. By securing this tax authority for two additional years, county officials gain more predictable funding, reducing uncertainty for future budgets and ongoing programs.
Visitor Impact, Not Resident. The tax primarily affects non-residents—visitors staying at hotels and motels—rather than Suffolk County homeowners, which can be a less controversial way to fund local needs.
Impacts on Tourism and Business. While helpful for county finances, extended taxes on accommodations may influence hotel pricing and competitiveness, potentially affecting local tourism and related businesses.
