What's happening
This bill updates how Yonkers receives and uses foreign fire insurance tax funds, aligning it with sections 9104 and 9105 of insurance law.
Why it matters
Expands flexibility in fund use. By referencing sections 9104 and 9105 of insurance law instead of restricting funds to care for indigent and disabled firemen and their families, this bill allows Yonkers' fire department to use foreign fire insurance tax funds for a broader set of purposes, including general welfare and benefit of the fire department and its members.
Modernizes distribution rules. The bill removes outdated requirements, such as sending a fixed percentage of funds to the Volunteer Firemen’s Home at Hudson, NY, and instead aligns Yonkers with statewide standards, potentially simplifying administration and reducing paperwork.
Aligns Yonkers with statewide practices. This change brings Yonkers in line with how other municipalities in New York distribute and use these funds, ensuring consistency, transparency, and potentially avoiding legal or audit issues stemming from unique local rules.
