What's happening
This bill extends the expiration date for certain East End town trustees to be considered municipal corporations under law until July 31, 2019.
Why it matters
Extending the expiration date gives the East End town trustees (Southampton, East Hampton, Southold) continued legal recognition as municipal corporations, which allows them to participate in property transactions and agreements under section 72-h of the general municipal law.
This extension may help protect the trustees’ traditional rights and responsibilities over public lands and resources, which is especially significant for local governance and environmental oversight in these historic towns.
By postponing the expiration, the bill buys time for ongoing discussions or potential permanent legislative solutions about the trustees’ status, preventing disruption in local governance or land management during the interim.
