What's happening

This bill requires New York schools to annually notify teachers in writing about the federal educator expense tax deduction.

Why it matters

  1. Raises awareness among teachers about a potentially valuable federal tax benefit. many educators may not know they can deduct out-of-pocket classroom expenses, so this notice could help them save money at tax time.

  2. Mandates clear, annual written communication. from school administrators, increasing the likelihood that teachers receive accurate and timely information instead of relying on word-of-mouth or irregular updates.

  3. Defines "teacher" broadly. to include not just classroom instructors but also counselors, principals, and aides who work at least 900 hours per year, ensuring a wide range of educational staff are informed about the deduction.

  4. May improve teacher morale and financial well-being. by acknowledging their personal investment in classroom supplies and supporting their ability to recoup some of those expenses.
