What's happening

This bill allows teaching assistant experience to count toward the teaching experience required for certification in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Broadens the pathway to teacher certification. by recognizing teaching assistant experience as valid, potentially helping paraprofessionals advance their careers without starting from scratch.

  2. Could help address teacher shortages. by making it easier and quicker for experienced teaching assistants to become certified teachers, increasing the pool of eligible candidates.

  3. Values hands-on classroom experience. by formally acknowledging the practical skills and knowledge teaching assistants gain, which may lead to more effective and prepared new teachers.

  4. May incentivize more people to start as teaching assistants. , knowing that the experience can count toward full certification, possibly improving recruitment and retention in both roles.
