What's happening
This bill requires all New York school districts to conduct and report comprehensive threat assessments, including active shooter protocols, within one year.
Why it matters
Mandates a standardized, expert-guided review. of existing safety and emergency response plans in every district and school building, aiming to identify and address gaps or weaknesses that may have gone unnoticed under current protocols.
Specifically targets active shooter and lethal attacker scenarios,. requiring schools to assess and improve their preparedness for the most severe types of threats, not just general emergencies.
Involves both educational and homeland security authorities. in receiving and potentially acting on the results, which could lead to broader changes in state policy, resource allocation, and oversight based on assessment findings.
Provides state funding for these assessments,. reducing financial barriers for districts and signaling that threat preparedness is a statewide priority rather than a local burden.
