What's happening
This bill designates State Route 17B in Sullivan County as "The Woodstock Way" in a ceremonial manner without changing its official name.
Why it matters
Promotes local heritage and tourism. By ceremonially naming State Route 17B as "The Woodstock Way," the bill honors the historic Woodstock Festival site, potentially attracting tourists and celebrating the region's cultural legacy.
No impact on navigation or official records. Since the designation is ceremonial, official maps, addresses, and legal documents will continue to use the current name, minimizing confusion for residents, travelers, and businesses.
Minimal cost and disruption. The bill only requires the installation and maintenance of signage, avoiding the larger logistical and financial challenges that come with officially renaming a state highway.
Community identity and pride. The new designation can help foster a sense of pride among local residents by officially recognizing the area's role in a significant cultural event, without creating administrative burdens.

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the county of Sullivan as "The Woodstock Way"
Purpose
This legislation designates State Route 17B in Sullivan County as "The Woodstock Way."
Summary of provisions
Section 1: Amends the Highway Law by adding a new section 342-vvv which designates State Route 17B in Sullivan County as "The Woodstock Way."

Section 3: Effective date.
Justification
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was held in Bethel, New York on August 15-17, 1969. The festival attracted half a million people and became an iconic moment for a generation of Americans. The site of the festival now is home to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and the most trav- eled path to site continues to be via New York State Route 17B. As the 50th anniversary of the festival approaches, it is only fitting to designate the route to the festival site in this way. This legislation was requested by the Sullivan County Legislature.
