What's happening

This bill requires at least one electric vehicle charging station per 150,000 New York residents and sets prevailing wage standards for their construction.

Why it matters

  1. Mandates a minimum statewide network of charging stations. By tying the number of required electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to the state's population (one per 150,000 residents), the law ensures infrastructure will scale as the population grows, supporting wider EV adoption and reducing range anxiety.

  2. Guarantees fair labor standards for construction. The bill requires that all construction and development of EV charging stations comply with prevailing wage laws, meaning workers will be paid at rates in line with local standards. This provision aims to protect workers' rights and ensure high-quality jobs as the green infrastructure expands.

  3. Increases transparency and public accountability. The law obligates the relevant authority to publish annual reports detailing the number, locations, and costs of all publicly operated EV charging stations, giving the public and policymakers clear insight into the program’s progress and spending.
