What's happening

This bill requires New York polling sites to have at least 15% more affidavit ballots based on the previous similar election's turnout.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces the risk of affidavit ballot shortages. by requiring counties to supply at least 15% more affidavit ballots than the turnout in the previous similar election, potentially preventing situations where voters are turned away due to a lack of ballots.

  2. Improves voter access and confidence. , especially for those whose eligibility may be questioned or whose names are not on the rolls, as affidavit ballots are a crucial last-resort voting method.

  3. Promotes better election preparedness and planning. by mandating a specific, turnout-based calculation for ballot supply, rather than leaving quantities to the discretion of local officials.

  4. May help prevent disenfranchisement. in high-turnout or unexpected scenarios, such as increased voter participation or administrative errors, making the voting process more resilient.
