What's happening
This bill extends Clinton County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax until November 30, 2022.
Why it matters
Continued Local Revenue. By extending Clinton County’s authority to collect an extra 1% sales tax, the bill allows the county to maintain a significant source of local revenue, which can be crucial for funding county services and offsetting budget shortfalls.
Local Control Over Tax Proceeds. The bill ensures that all revenue generated from the additional sales tax remains under the county’s control and is used exclusively for county purposes, rather than being shared with other municipalities or subject to state revenue-sharing agreements.
Potential Impact on Residents and Businesses. The continuation of the higher sales tax rate could affect local consumers and businesses, potentially raising the overall cost of goods and services in Clinton County compared to neighboring areas without the additional tax.
Temporary Authority, Not Permanent. The extension is time-limited (now through November 30, 2022), signaling ongoing legislative review and local accountability for the use and necessity of this additional taxing power.

The bill would extend the county’s authority to impose an additional 1% sales and compensating use tax through November 30, 2022, rather than November 30, 2020.
Clinton County shoppers and businesses making taxable purchases
The extension would allow the county to continue charging the additional 1% tax for two more years.
Local governments with county revenue-sharing agreements
