What's happening
This bill extends Clinton County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax until November 30, 2022.
Why it matters
Continues Extra Revenue for County Services. By extending the extra 1% sales tax, Clinton County will keep receiving additional revenue, which can support county services, public safety, infrastructure, or offset property taxes.
No Sharing with Other Governments. The bill maintains that all proceeds from the extra sales tax must be used solely for county purposes and cannot be shared with cities, towns, or villages within the county, ensuring those funds stay under county control.
Temporary Measure with Future Uncertainty. This extension is set to expire in 2022, which means the county will need to revisit and justify the tax again, creating ongoing uncertainty for budget planning and local businesses.
Affects Local Businesses and Consumers. Residents and shoppers in Clinton County will continue paying a higher sales tax rate compared to some neighboring regions, which could influence where people choose to shop and impact local business competitiveness.
