What's happening

This bill extends the prohibition on commercially taking striped bass from the Hudson River until April 1, 2024.

Why it matters

  1. Continues protection of striped bass populations. By extending the ban on commercial striped bass fishing in the Hudson River, the bill supports ongoing efforts to recover and maintain healthy populations of this ecologically significant fish, which has faced historic overfishing and environmental pressures.

  2. Impacts commercial fishing businesses. The extension means that commercial fishers who rely on Hudson River striped bass will remain unable to harvest and sell this species for several more years, potentially affecting their income and business planning.

  3. Signals ongoing environmental concerns. The continued prohibition highlights that New York State still considers the striped bass population and/or river ecosystem vulnerable, and that full recovery or safe conditions for commercial fishing have not yet been achieved.
