What's happening

This bill requires annual review of bus driver files and mandates public display of updated driver credentials and operating information.

Why it matters

  1. Annual review of bus driver files. increases the frequency of oversight compared to the previous three-year cycle, potentially catching issues with driver qualifications or safety records more quickly.

  2. Mandatory public display of driver credentials and operational information. means passengers and the public can more easily verify that both the bus and the driver are properly authorized and inspected, promoting greater transparency and accountability.

  3. Annual re-issuance of credentials. ensures that only currently qualified drivers are operating buses, reducing the risk of expired or outdated qualifications slipping through unnoticed.

  4. Implementation requires new administrative procedures. for both the Department of Transportation and bus operators, likely increasing compliance costs but also aiming to improve passenger safety and confidence in public and contract bus services.
